Failed MONC in Mayor Mark

MAYOR MARK WILLEMSE SAFELY IN DRIVER’S SEAT AFTER MOTION IS DEFEATED

At yesterday’s council meeting, Mark Willemse survived a motion of no confidence (“MONC”) and can now get on with the job at hand, as no further MONC against him may be brought for at least three months.

MAYCO NAMED

The much-anticipated Mayoral Committee (“MAYCO”) has also been announced. The MAYCO is now smaller and stronger, and consists of Councillors van Aswegen (Finance and Governance), Salaze (Community Services) and Myers (Planning and Technical).

COUNCIL ASKS MINISTER BREDELL TO REMOVE COUNCILLOR WAXA

Independent Councillor Velile Waxa was found guilty of serious breaches of the Councillor’s Code of Conduct by the council’s disciplinary committee in May. Yesterday, the council adopted the disciplinary committee’s recommendation and resolved to ask Minister Anton Bredell to remove Waxa as a councillor. We trust that Minister Bredell will attend to the matter without delay, as it has been dragging on for more than a year. Knysna cannot afford to allow councillors who commit such offences to remain in office.

Note that despite his egregious conduct, Waxa is closely allied with ousted mayor Eleanor Bouw-Spies and enjoys the support of provincial DA leader Bonginkosi Madikezela.

The council is now in recess from 3-6 July for a short and well-deserved break.

We expect that a Special Council meeting will be called shortly after the Oyster Festival to deal with urgent business.
